William Inge, D.D., Provost of Worcester College, Oxford, died on Saturday at noon in his lodgings at the college, after a protracted and painful illness endured with extraordinary fortitude and patience. Born in 1829, the eldest son of the Rev. Charles Inge, he was one of the group of finished scholars who issued from Shrewsbury School...Elected in due course to a Fellowship at Worcester he speedily resigned it, and married the daughter of the Ven. Edward Churton, Archdeacon of Cleveland, whom he assisted as curate till 1874, when he accepted the living of Alrewas, in Shropshire. In 1881 he was nominated by Lord Salisbury to the Provostship of Worcester College, which he has held to the present time...He was offered but refused an English Bishopric,....Nis liberalities, which were great, were marked by the same absence of ostentation. Dr. Inge's increasing ill-health of late years caused him to withdraw from various spheres of activity. ... The funeral will take place on Wednesday at 2.30 at Shrewsbury in the general cemetery. The first part of the service will be read in the college chapel at 10 a.m.
