Obituary in The Times, Wednesday, 10 Apr 1901, p.7, reads: Mr. EDEN UPTON EDDIS, the portrait painter, whose death occurred on Sunday, was born in 1812, and remembered seeing the illuminations after the battle of Waterloo, when he was little more than three years old. He was a pupil of Sars, in Bloomsbury, where many painters were trained; at 15 he entered the Royal Academy Schools, where he remembered Turner as visitor, and he was a medallist in 1828. He painted portraits very early, and often regretted in later life that his father's premature death had shortened his period of study. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for 50 consecutive years. After his retirement from active professional work, he went to live at Shalford, near Guildford. There he continued to paint almost to the last, and gave pleasure to many by his gifts of pictures and drawings. Among the best known of his earlier works are "The Sisters," illustrating a poem in Keble's "Lyra Innocentium"; "Ruth and Naomi," and "The Raising of Jairus's Daughter." Many well-known persons sat to him, among them Sydney Smith, of whom he had many stories, and Macaulay. But it was in the portraits of children that he was specially successful, "Going to Work," a picture of a child on the sands, being perhaps the most popular. He was also well known for his drawings in chalk. Unfortunately many of his pictures are unsigned. He became a member of the Athenaeum very early in his career and for the last year had been the father of the club.
    • (Medical):Became deaf in his later years, around the time he moved to Shalford. From http://art.goantiques.com/detail,portrait-edgar-taylor,204103.html.
