Most-Represented Families
in the Halhed Family Trees

Our  modern Halhed family derives from many places and walks of life. The main Halhed family line traces its roots back to 16th century Oxfordshire in England, with the earliest records placing our Halheds in the thriving market town of Banbury.

A broad-scope examination of our 17532-plus ancestral family members and connections shows a diversity of origins. The oldest lines date from the Norman conquest of England, but later there were infusions of French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution, and one more recent line can be traced to some of the earliest French explorers of Canada. Through the centuries, some moved out from England and Europe, including some adventurers and explorers who travelled to the Americas and the Caribbean in the 1600's, many who lived their lives in India as administrators and military personnel with the East India Company from the late 1700's onwards, some of whom travelled farther afield in the 1800's to China, Japan, Malaya, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and parts of Africa.

Halhed Family and Principal Associated Families:

The table below lists surnames represented on our Halhed genealogy website by at least 40 individuals from the Halhed and Tozer lines. Years shown are the known individual birth or christening dates. Missing from this list are any families of my other two immediate forebear lines — Harlow and Hill — for which we have little hard data as of yet.  The Halhed line is rather small in number of individuals, but richly connected to the Brassey, Caswall, Cotton, Fagge, Fielding/Feilding and Powell families.

The following list, last updated in November 2011, is ordered by number of individuals in our family tree, whether as direct descendants/ancestors or as connected families. Each listing in turn shows surname in the spelling most commonly used, followed by an approximate number of individuals born with that surname (in parentheses), and the range of years covered by known birthdates of those individuals. Many lines go back earlier in time than the period given, but we do not have reasonably certain dates for all individuals. Each family name is clickable, taking you to a complete list of those members currently shown within our on-line family tree.

Surname Unknown:

The last surname on the list — UNKNOWN — is still the most common.  Over the past several years, we have reduced the number of individuals with surname Unknown from 2144 to just 490, thanks in part to the recently enlarged availability of references through various databases and on-line reference materials. Most of these Unknown individuals are female.  In many older records, for example, christening records, the only surname given is that of the husband; likewise, census records do not include maiden names of wives.  In the absence of a marriage record, or other record showing the married woman with her father or a male sibling shown as a brother, or a record explicitly indicating the woman's maiden name, we have generally entered the surname as Unknown.  Any help you can provide with reducing the number of Unknowns in our tree will be greatly appreciated.
